Victoria’s Dog-Friendly Parks & Beaches
When you stay at our pet allowed hotel, you and your four-legged friend are perfectly positioned to explore the best of Victoria’s green spaces and waterfront trails. The city and its surrounding municipalities offer a wide range of dog-friendly parks and beaches, from oceanfront off-leash areas to scenic forest walks. Below are some of our favourite nearby spots for guests looking to make the most of their stay in Victoria BC!
Off-Leash Parks Near Downtown Victoria
Beacon Hill Park & Dallas Road Waterfront
Just minutes from the hotel, this iconic park-and-shoreline combo is a must-visit for dog lovers. Beacon Hill Park features a leash-optional zone on its southern edge near Dallas Road, while the Dallas Road Waterfront has an off-leash trail running between the bluff-top path and the seaside walkway. Dogs can enjoy ocean breezes, open fields, and a friendly community of local pups!
Fisherman’s Wharf Park & Clover Point
These popular waterfront areas combine coastal scenery with open spaces for dogs to run and socialize. Enjoy a leisurely stroll toward Fisherman’s Wharf for a bite at one of the outdoor pet-friendly patios that are perfect for guests staying in a dog friendly hotel near Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
Topaz Park & Banfield Park
Topaz Park, one of the city’s largest green spaces, features fields and trails ideal for energetic dogs. Banfield Park offers shaded areas and water access for cooling off after playtime.
Greater Victoria Off-Leash Adventures
Esquimalt & Oak Bay
If you’re venturing beyond downtown, Esquimalt Gorge Park and Saxe Point Park both welcome off-leash dogs in designated areas, offering waterfront trails and grassy fields. In Oak Bay, McNeill Bay Beach (Kitty Islet) allows off-leash dogs during daylight hours year-round, while Anderson Hill Park offers scenic walking routes with panoramic ocean views.
Saanich & Regional Parks
For longer hikes and forest escapes, head to Saanich’s Mount Douglas Park (PKOLS) or Mount Tolmie Park, where dogs can explore extensive trail networks under effective control. The nearby Elk/Beaver Lake and Thetis Lake Regional Parks are “doggy heavens,” offering kilometers of forest trails and lakeside paths where dogs can enjoy off-leash fun outside of busy beach zones!
On-Leash Beaches and Scenic Trails
While Victoria offers many leash-free areas, some beaches and trails require dogs to remain leashed. Gonzales Beach allows dogs only outside of summer months, while Willows Beach in Oak Bay and Cadboro Bay Beach in Saanich welcome leashed dogs during off-season months. Along the Dallas Road waterfront, note that the upper trail is off-leash, but the beach below the seawall is an on-leash area.
For leisurely on-leash walks, explore the Galloping Goose and Lochside Regional Trails, both easily accessible from downtown. These multi-use paths are great for long scenic walks with your legged friend and they’re only a short drive or bike ride from our hotel.
Helpful Tips Before You Go
Please note:
- Always check local signage, as seasonal restrictions may apply (especially on beaches during summer).
- Dogs must be on-leash in playgrounds, picnic areas, and sensitive natural habitats.
- Bring along the pet waste bags and towels provided in your room (part of our signature pooch amenities).
- Early morning or sunset walks are often the most peaceful times to explore Victoria’s trails and beaches.
At Chateau Victoria, we’re proud to be a pet allowed hotel that celebrates the spirit of our city, where every guest, including your four-legged family member, feels welcome and at home.
